March 2025 The first Rewild Carbon polygon is now well established, the vegetation is dense in places and challenging to walk through.  The forest floor is now virtually clear of grass cover and there are plenty of signs of natural regeneration and wildlife. The team were delighted to record camera trap images of a giant anteater moving through the trees during the most recent monitoring period.

March 2025 Planting was completed in December 2022 and, since then, the forest restoration team have been controlling non-native grass species, and watering and nurturing the young trees, replacing any that have not survived.

The young forest is providing much needed shelter and food for birds and mammals and there are early signs of natural regeneration.

March 2025 Planting was completed in January 2023 and since then, the forest restoration team have been controlling non-native grass species, watering and nurturing the young trees until they reach maturity.  Any seedlings which have not survived have been replaced. The camera traps in this area have captured some amazing images of a variety of species, including a puma and a maned wolf.

March 2025 This polygon is set apart from the main Rewild Carbon corridor and is particularly significant as it is the final part of a new corridor close to the forest fragment where black lion tamarin translocations have taken place.

The young trees, some of which were planted by Durrell staff in March 2023, are now two years old, standing upwards of five metres tall and many are flowering.  Species including puma and white-eared opossum have been recorded by camera trap.

Status

March 2025 Planting was completed in July 2023.  This polygon had isolated patches of established native trees, so the seedlings were carefully planted around them. Baseline data was gathered in May 2024 and the forest restoration team have been controlling non-native grasses in the area and making sure that the young trees have enough water to grow.

There have been many species of bird appearing in the area of this corridor, including red-legged seriema, toco toucan and ferruginous pygmy owl.

March 2025 Planting was completed in January 2024 and baseline data gathered a few months later.  The community-run reforestation services team have been regularly watering the young trees during the hot dry months and welcomed the start of the rainy season in October.

Although no mammals have been captured on film just yet, the team have been able to register the presence of several bird species, such as the turquoise-fronted amazon and the southern lapwing, through soundscape monitoring.

March 2025 Planting was completed in August 2024 and the forest restoration team are now controlling non-native grasses and ensuring the young trees have sufficient water as they grow.

This polygon is particularly significant as it borders the established forest fragment of Morro Do Diabo. The team have been thrilled to record several large mammal species in the area using camera traps, including lowland tapir and a puma.

March 2025 Planting was completed in November 2024. Maintenance activities are being carried out by the forest restoration team, such as invasive grass removal and making sure the young trees have sufficient water as they grow.

The richness of mammal and bird life in this planting site, which borders Polygon 3, was measured during planting. The first restoration data is due to be gathered during 2025.
